Digitall Reading Hero Awarded at No 10

Nitin Dabasia has been honoured at No 10 Downing Street after winning one of the National Year of Reading 'Hero' awards. Nitin, one of just thirty Reading Heroes, was presented with his award by the Prime Minister's wife, Sarah Brown, at a special ceremony which took place on Thursday 26th February marking the culmination of The National Year of Reading.

Nitin is an excellent example of how reading has changed in the past 20 years. Selected for his voluntary work with Digitall, a project run by the national volunteering charity TimeBank. Digitall brings together young people aged 18-25 who are willing to share their knowledge and experience of using computers and the internet with people over 45 who are interested in getting to grips with new technology. Young people act as mentors, supporting their mentee on a one to one basis to achieve their digital goals.

Nitin says: "Receiving this award, meeting Sarah Brown and visiting No 10 has been an amazing experience. Mrs Brown was so personable, she really showed such interest in what we've achieved and in the difference that individuals can make within a community - it is so great to know that she really understands the importance of reading in every area of life.

Sarah Brown said: "It was a real pleasure to welcome the Reading Heroes to No 10 today and to meet such an inspirational group of people. They all have incredible stories to tell, from the people who have learned to read later on in life to those who have helped others discover the great pleasure of reading and books. They all show how reading can enrich and transform lives."

TimeBank are dedicated to finding ways for people to give their time which inspires and matches their lives. Digitall mentors spend just 1 - 2 hours a week with their mentees but make a world of difference. For more information and how to get involved visit www.timebank.org.uk
